About the program

The SBS Talent Escalator (‘TE’) is a joint initiative of SBS together with each of Australia’s state and territory screen agencies to co-fund 12 to 16 week placements for emerging to mid-level practitioners from under-represented backgrounds.

This initiative is designed to support practitioners from backgrounds currently under-represented within the Australian screen industry, working directly with production companies on an SBS program.

It is intended to escalate careers by allowing participants to exercise skills that are a level up from their existing level of experience and secure flexible, on-the-job-paid learning and immersion opportunities to work in a collaborative and respectful environment.

Who can apply for a TE placement? (Eligibility criteria)

The TE is open to TV and film practitioners from under-represented backgrounds who meet the eligibility requirements set out in this section.

In their application cover letters, candidates should state how they meet the eligibility criteria for the TE placement.
Eligible applicants are practitioners from under-represented backgrounds who:
- Are residents of the participating screen agency’s state.
- Identify with one or more of these six groups, as outlined in the SBS Commissioning Inclusion Guidelines:
- First Nations peoples
- Culturally and linguistically diverse
- Non-European culturally and linguistically diverse
- People with disability
- LGBTQ+ communities
- Women from intersectional backgrounds (i.e., women who also identify with one or more of the above groups)
- Are Australian citizens or permanent residents, aged 18+
- Have relevant production experience
- Are not full-time students
- Must comply with the terms of trade of the relevant screen agency

Total Weeks: 12 Weeks **NB: There will be a two week break over the New Year period.
How many days per week: 5 days per week
Hours: 8am – 6pm. Note: actual hours may vary.

Production dates of the program: Q3 and Q4, 2026

Supervision

During the placement, the participant will be primarily supervised by the Story Producer at ITV STUDIOS.

The participant will also be able to contact the SBS Commissioning Creative Diversity team throughout the placement.

How will the placement provide a ‘level up’ for participants?

This opportunity will provide participants with the opportunity to extend their existing skill set and gain experience which is a level up from their existing skill set.
This placement will provide the successful candidate with an opportunity to work within a team of other Story APs and Producers at the heart of the editorial process. They will level up by learning to identify narrative arcs, character beats in raw footage, as well as an understanding of the elements needed to build a sequence from a story. In addition to this, the participant will be given training on working in Avid, which they will use throughout their placement.

The Story Producer will provide guidance and mentorship throughout the placement, showing the participant examples of how to recognise and highlight key story elements in rushes, as well as coaching on how to identify story arcs. They will also be given opportunities to independently search rushes to assist finding ‘missing’ moments that may assist the wider team with their work.


Job description/Key tasks and responsibilities:

The Story Assistant Producer will be based in the Pyrmont offices as part of a story team that are reviewing a high volume of rushes, and creating story notes of these to assist both the field team with their story focus, as well as provide summaries that will be relied upon in the edit. Working on Avid, this is an excellent opportunity for the successful candidate to learn both story producing and technical post producing skills that will help them in both field and post roles in the future.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
Marking up timelines in Avid
Summarising content into clear notes that detail the key story beats for the field and post teams.
Assisting the Story Team with searching through rushes.
Contributing in regular story meetings.

Training objectives and learning goals

By the end of their engagement, the participant will have gained an understanding of key story elements and requirements that will enable them to mark up a timeline in Avid and summarise key events within the rushes. These skills will be acquired through them having the opportunity to view and log rushes under the guidance of their supervisor, as well as through participation and feedback provided during the regular team meetings.

Each role is based in Northern NSW (based near Murwillumbah) for the period listed below. Travel and accommodation costs will be covered if you do not live locally. Attachment Opportunities for 2026:

1. Sound Assistant: Mon 26th October - Fri 4th December 2026 (5 Days Per Week: Mon - Fri recurrence)

This Sound Assistant Attachment is designed to provide hands-on experience within the Audio Department on one of the UKs largest and most technically complex reality television series. Working alongside the Audio Director, Sound Supervisors and Audio Operators, you will gain practical experience across all aspects of television sound production, including equipment preparation, microphone deployment, live audio monitoring, location recording, troubleshooting and broadcast workflows. Operating within a unique jungle environment, the participant will learn how audio supports Studio, Camp, Walk In, Trials and Challenges, while developing an understanding of both the technical and operational requirements of delivering high-quality sound for live and as-live television. Throughout the attachment, the participant will build confidence working within fast-paced production environments, learning how to adapt to changing operational requirements, solve problems under pressure and contribute to the successful delivery of daily television programming.

2. Camera Assistant: Mon 26th October 2026 - Fri 4th December 2026 (5 Days Per Week: Mon-Fri recurrence)

This Camera Assistant Attachment is designed to provide hands-on experience within the Camera Department on one of the UK’s largest and most technically complex reality television productions. Working alongside the Camera Supervisor, Camera Operators and Technical teams, the participant will gain practical experience across all aspects of television camera operations, including equipment preparation, camera setup, location filming, live broadcasts, rushes management and technical support. Operating within a fast-paced jungle environment, the participant will learn how multiple camera crews work together to capture and deliver high-quality content across a Studio, Camp, Walk In OB, Trials and Challenges. You will gain exposure to both the technical and creative aspects of television production, while developing the skills required to support a professional Camera Team.

3. Art Assistant: Tues 6th October 2026 - Fri 4th December 2026 (5 Days Per Week: Mon- Fri recurrence)

The main purpose of Art Assistant Attachment is to provide practical, hands-on experience within the Art Department on one of the UKs largest reality television series with its unique jungle-based Site. Working alongside the Art Director, Set Decorators and Construction team, the you will gain a comprehensive understanding of how creative concepts are developed, constructed and delivered on screen. You will develop practical skills in set dressing, prop management, scenic preparation, workshop practices and visual continuity while supporting the day-to-day operations of the Art Department. Throughout the attachment, you will gain experience across key production areas including OB ‘Walk In’, Studio, Camp, Trials & Challenges, developing an understanding of how each environment presents unique creative, technical and logistical requirements. They will learn how the Art Department collaborates closely with Production, Camera, Lighting and other departments to create visually engaging environments while working to tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

4. Production Coordinator -: Tues 6th October 2026 - Fri 4th December 2026 – (5 Days Per Week: Mon-Fri recurrence)

The ‘Production Coordinator’ attachment will learn about the seamless execution of all daily production activities while gaining hands-on experience in managing the logistics of a fast-paced production. As a Production Coordinator Attachment, you’ll work alongside the Production Management team to learn how a high-pressure, live TV series is brought to life in one of the most challenging environments - the jungle. This attachment offers hands-on experience in supporting the Coordination of daily production operations, including managing call sheets, crew logistics, equipment movements, and cross-departmental communication. You will observe and assist with real-time decision-making, problem-solving under pressure, and adapting to the unpredictable & exciting nature of live broadcast. You’ll gain insight into scheduling, budgeting, health and safety protocols, and how to maintain smooth operations across departments, all while dealing with remote locations, tight timelines, and evolving production needs.

5. ‘OB’ Walk In Assistant: Tues 6th October 2026 - Fri 27th November 2026 (5 Days Per Week: Mon-Fri recurrence)

This ‘OB’ Walk In Assistant Trainee Attachment is designed to provide hands-on experience within one of the most exciting and fast-paced areas of the series - the Walk In. Working alongside the Walk In Production Management team, Producers, Directors, Camera Crew and Technical Departments, the participant will gain practical experience supporting the planning and delivery of a large-scale, reality television Outside Broadcast (OB) operation. The Walk In is a unique, high-pressure filming environment involving multiple camera crews, helicopters, specialist filming equipment, live logistics and rapidly changing operational requirements. The participant will learn how a complex reality television shoot is planned, coordinated and executed while working within tight timeframes and challenging outdoor environments. Throughout the placement, the participant will develop skills in crew coordination, logistics management, communication, operational support, health and safety, problem solving and real-time decision making. You will gain a unique understanding of how multiple departments work together to deliver The Walk In.

6. Lighting Assistant: Mon 26th October 2026 - Fri 4th Dec 2026 (5 Days Per Week: Mon-Fri recurrence)

As a Lighting Assistant on our unique jungle-based live TV series, you will gain hands-on experience supporting the lighting department across all production environments, including the off-site Walk In, the live broadcast Studio, and the action-packed Trials and Challenges. You will work closely with experienced Gaffers, Lighting Directors, and Technicians, learning how to operate, maintain, and position lighting equipment to meet the creative and practical needs of a fast-paced reality TV Series. You will develop an understanding of live broadcast lighting setups, creative lighting design for jungle environments, and ensure you meet health & safety protocols. This trainee position is designed to prepare you for future roles in the lighting department by exposing you to real-world production challenges and solutions under the guidance of seasoned professionals.

To be successful…
Eager to learn and have a genuine interest in gaining experience in TV production.
Able to fulfil the required dates for the role in Northern NSW.
Some exposure or experience in the attachment area you would like to work in (desirable but not essential).

The Role

Reporting to the Senior Financial Accountant, you wi l enjoy a highly varied 360-degree assistant accountant role. You wi l take true ownership of core transactional processes, keep our cash flow moving, and play a vital role in month-end and compliance reporting. You wil be heavily involved in maintaining statutory compliance, and advising on internal accounting workflows.

Key Responsibilities & Tasks
● Financial & Statutory Reporting: Assist with preparation of the financial statements for presentation to management, governing and statutory bodies.
● Managing the general ledger including preparation and review of balance sheet reconciliations, banking and management of intercompany transactions and balances
● Accounts Payable (AP): Take ful ownership of the AP process, reconcile supplier statements, manage approvals within delegated authority limits, and maintain up-to-date supplier records.
● Accounts Receivable (AR): Create and maintain debtor master files, raise milestone invoices for productions and ad-hoc invoices, maintain the AR database, and confidently fo low up on outstanding balances.
● Credit Cards & Banking Daily Operations: Administer our expense management system, manage staff credit cards (including adjusting limits), and import monthly submissions with precise GL coding and GST accuracy. Handle daily cash balance updates and weekly production account transfers.
● Production Recharges: Own the end-to-end recharge process to Productions, including raising invoices for credit cards and AP recharges, preparing backup documentation, and fo lowing up.
● Month-End Duties: Reconcile Head Office and production bank accounts, handle AP/AR trial balances, post month-end accruals, manage the Fixed Asset register (depreciation & GL reconciliation), and complete intercompany reconciliations.
● Compliance Support: Assist with GST, WHT, and BAS returns, look after Payment Times Reporting, help set up new users/accounts on banking platforms, and support the wider finance team during the end-of-year audit.

About You

To be successful in this role, you should have a solid foundation in transactional accounting and a deep understanding of standard accounting procedures.

We are looking for:
● At least 12 months relevant work experience in a varied Assistant Accountant role (experience in media, television, or entertainment is a huge plus!).
● Strong technical understanding of AP, AR, bank reconciliations, and general ledger coding.
● Solid grasp of Australian tax compliance, including GST, BAS, and withholding tax.
● High attention to detail and intermediate-to-advanced Excel skils (you' l be working closely with spreadsheets and Google Sheets).
● Excellent communication skils—you’l be colaborating with production crew, external vendors, and internal stakeholders regularly.
● A proactive mindset with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
● Minimum Bachelor Degree or higher-level qualification in Accounting, Finance or a related discipline to satisfy the requirements of a professional Accountant role.
